Horse Tales: American Images and Icons, 1800-2000 is a collection of objects from fine art and popular culture that demonstrate the varied ways in which the image of the horse has infused American culture. Ninteenth-century artists include Frederic Remington and Currier and Ives. Among the twentieth-century painters, sculptors, and photographers are Thomas Hart Benton, Mary Frank, Elie Nadelman, Eadweard Muybridge, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Andy Warhol, and Susan Rothenberg. There are also installations and montages by contemporary artists.

Panel Discussion

A discussion moderated by Charlotta Kotik, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, will investigate how three contemporary artists, Janet Biggs, Marc Dennis, and Ray Rapp, consider the use of imagery in their art. Ms. Kotik, an authority on the depiction of the horse in art history, will place the art of Horse Tales in a larger context.
